Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first native born citizen of the United States to be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. She established the first Catholic school in the country, St. Joseph’s Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and founded the religious order, the Sisters of Charity, in 1810.
