Caleb Cushing (1770-1820) was the older brother of John Newmarch Cushing, Sr., and the uncle of Caleb Cushing (1800-1879), American diplomat and statesman.Oil on canvas, 24 ¾ x 19 ½ inches. The reverse with labels providing information on the sitter and the painting’s provenance.

Provenance: Descended in the Cushing family to Ellen G. Todd (1874-1959) of 90 High St. Newburyport, Massachusetts; to her great-nephew, Lawrence Cushing Goodhue (1889-1965) and his estate; “Important Marine and China Trade Treasures,” Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, August 18-19, 2001, lot 915.
