James Crooke of Liverpool traded in Canton until 1849 and Hong Kong until approximately 1853. Oil on canvas, 11 ½ x 9 ¾ inches.The reverse with old label inscribed “James Crooke, at one time Thos. & Jno. Brocklebank’s agent in China. Painted in Hong Kong circa 1830-1840. Father of Frederick James Crooke, our agent in Calcutta whose son, Captain Ralph Crooke R.N., A.D.C. is one of my earliest Godsons. R.B. 3 Decr. 1921.” In Chinese carved giltwood frame.
