Each painted on plaster, Appleton’s with gilt highlights, 3 ¾ x 3 inches. In original frames, the reverse with Miers’ printed label. Both merchants, Appleton (1766-1853) established cotton mills at Waltham and Lowell; Bigelow (1783-1815) moved to Baltimore after his marriage.
