The “Mayflower” was the victorious U.S. defender of the sixth America’s Cup in 1886 against the Scottish challenger “Galatea.” Oil on artist’s board, 8 x 12 inches. Signed “J.E. Buttersworth” l.r. Inscribed “A Race with Galatea & Mayflower/ on the Homeward trip, the squadron in the Distance” twice in pencil on the reverse.

Literature: Listed in Rudolph J. Schaefer, “J.E. Buttersworth: 19th Century Marine Painter,” 1975, p. 236, no. 24 and in the 2009 edition, p. 233 (though described as oil on canvas).
