Purcell is best known as the first owner of the John Paul Jones House, which he built for his bride in 1758. After his death she took in boarders, the most famous being Jones who rented rooms while outfitting the “Ranger.” The gold band with raised lettering on black enamel “GREGORY PURCELL ESQ. OB: 31 OCT 1776 AE 49” centering a rectangular stone. Diameter ¾ inches.
