BRISTOL DELFT POLYCHROME CHINOISERIE CHARGER, CIRCA 1740.

Est. $800-$1,200
Sold: $840 ($700)

Painted in in blue, green, yellow and dark iron-red with a figure pointing to a large jardiniere of flowers set on a low table, and with two sizable insects hovering around his head, all within a blue shaped cartouche border, the rim with demi-flowerhead panels reserved on a trellis diaper border, a leaf painted in dark iron-red enamel on the reverse. Diameter 13 inches.

Provenance: Jonathan Horne, London, January 2003.

Literature: A dish depicting the same view, but inscribed “Jacob & Rebecca Anobas,” is discussed and illustrated in Britton, Ibid, p. 206, n. 12.85. The author notes that the name “Anobas” is very rare and suggests the dish may have been made for a foreign visitor.
