hubertyIn his final home in Stratham, New Hampshire, Jim created his own impressive mini-museum of historic furniture, paintings, silver, rugs, and Chinese export porcelain.

He was a true collector and like some, never had the funds before an object became available, but could always find them when something he wanted came up for sale. Beyond this, he never had space for anything else, but again, always found the space after acquiring a new object.

Jim, a self taught collector, started collecting in his 30’s while cattle ranching and working for Chevron in the San Francisco area. When he began collecting, as many do, he purchased objects graduating from very good to the very best and over time, he developed a keen “eye” for form, proportion, and quality.

He especially liked Philadelphia side chairs and studied them carefully comparing details trying to figure out which one was really the best.  He also loved his Frothingham bureau with its large claw and ball feet and beautifully grained mahogany. Interestingly, Jim purchased this piece from John Walton in 1978 who had recently purchased it from Ron Bourgeault at Ron’s very first Northeast auction sale.  Now, Ron has the pleasure of selling it again almost 40 years later!

As is evidenced by the superior quality of Chinese export porcelain in the collection, Jim sought rare colors and objects with historical significance.

Being the true collector, he remained a determined bidder this January at Sotheby’s Americana auction despite being under hospice care.  It was extremely difficult for him to get around but he made it to the previews and talked with old friends. He loved shows, dealers, and auctions.

As his health steadily failed he wished for nothing more than to be with his loved ones, his antiques, his music, and to have his daily cocktails.

Jim would be extremely pleased to see his collection publicized and auctioned for other collectors to be given the chance to enjoy these antiques that gave him great pleasure.
