The squadron, under Commodore John D. Sloat, won a skirmish with the Mexican coast guard, leading to the annexation of California to the United States. Oil on artist's board, 13 ½ x 18 ½ inches. Signed "Carlton Chapman" l.l. Inscribed in pencil on the reverse "July 7, 1846." The frame with remnants of a label for Gump's, San Francisco.
