RARE AND IMPORTANT AMERICAN CARVED AND PAINTED FIGURE OF "JACK TAR," ATTRIBUTED TO JEREMIAH DODGE, CIRCA 1845.

The carving of a sailor in mid-nineteenth century nautical attire, standing and tipping his flat-brimmed hat in greeting, mounted on a stepped wooden plank "deck" base. Height on base 86 ½ inches. Jeremiah Dodge (1781-1860) was the son of a shipwright and probably apprenticed with Simeon Skillin III of New York. They later formed a partnership, with Dodge working as a ship's figurehead carver.
