WINSLOW HOMER (AMERICAN 1836-1910). MACKEREL FISHING.
Sold: $1,560 ($1,300)
The Portland Museum of Art’s exhibit “Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine” (September 22 – December 30, 2012) included three panels painted by Homer for the interior of a boat, similar to the panel offered here. It is interesting to note that this panel’s construction- a mortise and tenon joint on the right and a mortised cleat on the left- makes the painting appear to have been cut from a larger piece, perhaps the wall of a boat. Our attribution is based on the similarity of views, the panel’s construction and the signature, which appears to be original. Oil on cleated panel, 14 x 18 ¼ inches. Signed “W. Homer” l.l.
