Nellis (1814-1860), a carriage maker, was employed by the Overland Mail Express when he was killed by an Indian in California. Oil on cradled panel, 21 x 18 ¾ inches. Accompanied by a photograph of the reverse before cradling, inscribed “Solomon Keller Nellis/ Likeness was Drawn Aug. 1, 1831.”
