The mustard ground decorated in sgraffito with a gardener wearing a coat, hat and boots and leaning on a spade, incised around the rim “Love me as I Love thee MALLEY Litecap hir dish June th12 Ad 1819.” Diameter 11 ½ inches.Edwin Atlee Barber, in “Tulip Ware of the Pennsylvania-German Potters,” pp. 186-187, describes a pie plate, probably made by a German potter,”…with central figure of a man, resembling a sailor or fisherman…,” and with the identical inscription in English surrounding the rim. Barber also noted that Mollie Lightcap’s name has been found on other pieces.
