MENDENHALL FERRY: FULL SPREAD EAGLE BORDER,’ STAFFORDSHIRE DARK BLUE TRANSFER-PRINTED CUP PLATE, JOSEPH STUBBS, BURSLEM, 1822-34.

Est. $400-$600

Diameter 4 ⅝ inches.

Provenance: Freeman’s, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 23, 1996.

Literature: An identical cup plate is illustrated in David and Linda Arman, “Anglo-American Ceramic Cup Plates,” Part I, p. 28, n. 102. In their book “Historical China Cup Plates,” n. 90, Richard H. and Virginia A. Wood use a 5 ¼- inch plate as an example of the view, stating they had seen a 3 ½- inch cup plate that was unavailable for illustration, and that another cup plate had been published in the “Old China Magazine,” February 1904, vol. 3, p. 80, n. 4. The Armans suggest the cup plate may have been mismeasured, noting they have had two 4 ½- inch cup plates which compare exactly to the “3 ½- inch” example photographed in “Old China Magazine.”
