JOSEPH B. SMITH (AMERICAN 1798-1876). THE BARQUE “T.J. SOUTHARD”, J. BISHOP COMMANDER, COMING IN THE HARBOR OF NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 1851.
Built in 1848 at Richmond, Maine, by Thomas Jefferson Southard, the bark is portrayed approaching Castle William. Oil on canvas, 24 x 32 inches. The title inscribed in gilt lettering below the image. The reverse with original label for “J.B. Smith/ Marine Artist/ 226 South St. (Opposite the Screw Dock).”
