McClellan, born in Colrain, Massachusetts in 1773, practiced medicine in Columbia County for over 40 years. Oil on canvas, 30 ½ x 24 ½ inches. Signed, dated and inscribed on the reverse “John McClellan Aged 48 1821/ Painted by A. Phillips.”
